and welcome to “The Amazing Work”.

Today, we are introducing

a classic Montessori activity: The Three-Part Card.

It has three types of cards:

The control card — with both picture and word.

(the picture-word card);

The picture card — image only.

And the word card — Chinese character only.

The cards are usually grouped by categories such as fruits, vegetables, animals…

How do children use them?

The process has three progressive stages.

First,

the teacher uses the classic Three-Period Lesson —

through naming, recognition, and pronunciation —

to help the child learn the names of objects.

For example, the teacher might say:

“This is Chinese yam. You’ve had it before — the sticky one.”

Next,

using the control cards as a reference,

the child matches the picture cards

with the word cards.

At this stage,

each Chinese character becomes a

unique “shape” to observe and match.

Through repeated visual practice,

the child becomes naturally familiar with how the characters look.

Finally,

once the child is somewhat familiar with the characters,

he tries independent reading:

He can shuffle the picture cards

and match them using only the word cards.

After matching,

he uses the control cards to check and correct his work —

That’s true independent learning.

So what are the benefits of the Three-Part Cards?

They greatly expand a child’s vocabulary in specific categories,

Building a strong language foundation.

They sharpen visual discrimination ,

concentration, and observation skills.

And most importantly —

Through repeated observation and comparison,

they help the child naturally move from recognizing images to reading words,

At the same time, they develop independent thinking and the habit of self-correction.
